What is online file storage?

Understand online storage, local copies, sync and independent backups. Learn how to organise and verify files before relying on a transfer.

A FileUSB guide · Practical usage notes

How online storage works

Online file storage means transferring a file into an online account and accessing it through that account later. A local file does not move onto the internet by itself: you must start the upload and check that it finishes. Opening the same document after moving from a phone to a computer is one everyday use. A sharing link is an address that grants access to selected content, not the content itself.

Storage, sync and backup differ

Storage describes where a file is kept. Sync carries changes between selected locations; deletion may be one of those changes. An independent backup is a separate, verified copy you can turn to if the main environment fails. Copying a file into two folders in one account does not create an independent backup against losing access to that service. Keep an important copy somewhere else and check that you can open it.

A small checklist for your first upload

Choose a harmless example file. Check remaining space, make a useful folder and complete the upload. Verify its name and size, then download and open it. Check the image or document pages rather than trusting the filename alone. Avoid closing the browser during transfer, and do not remove the original before a success result. Divide larger collections into manageable batches using the same routine.

What to follow over time

Review used space, plan dates and open sharing links regularly. Access permission and retention duration are separate: a working link does not mean an account is kept forever. The storage page explains the panel tools, while the live catalog shows current quota and duration conditions. Using online space still requires looking after your own copies and credentials. A clear folder structure makes future searches easier, particularly as your collection grows across devices.
